Evelyn Underhill’s words are relevant and timely to today’s seekers and nones. Robyn Wrigley-Carr will explore how particularly relevant to today’s uncertain times are her words from the period leading up to World War II. This will be a powerful and enriching event, which will combine the talk with experiential periods of prayer and meditation. Please join us if you can, and share this with anyone you think might be interested.
The event is free, and Saint Mark’s has graciously made the space available, but we’d appreciate a donation from those attending who are able, and if you are unable to join us, please consider supporting the event with a donation as well.
Evelyn Underhill (1975-1941) is a highly celebrated writer in spirituality who gave spiritual direction and led retreats in the 1920s and 30s in England. During World War II, Underhill wrote letters of encouragement to her “Prayer Group” (quaintly named the “Theological Kindergarten”), to sustain and encourage them during their profound uncertainty and pain.
Our present world is fragile, with wars, COVID and climate change, and Underhill’s words can also encourage us as we navigate these uncertain times.
In this event, Robyn Wrigley-Carr will provide a lecture outlining some of the major strands of nurture and challenge in Underhill’s letters, before leading us in a time of prayer and meditation.
Underhill invites us to discover “God-given peace and joy, that climate of Eternity, at our centre” to help us “keep our feet” in our present “unsteady times.” Please join us!
Robyn Wrigley-Carr is Associate Professor in Spirituality and Spiritual Care at the University of Divinity, Australia. She is the author of The Spiritual Formation of Evelyn Underhill (2020), Music of Eternity: Meditations for Advent with Evelyn Underhill (The Archbishop of York’s Advent Book, 2021), and edited Evelyn Underhill’s Prayer Book (2018). As well as writing numerous articles and presenting on podcasts such as Renovaré, Robyn is a spiritual director and leads retreats in Australia and England. Her PhD research examined Baron Friedrich von Hügel as a spiritual director (University of St Andrews, Scotland).
